In the event of the expansion and equipping of the hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Minister of (State) Health, Dr Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora paid the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja a courtesy visit today, 28th February 2022 to felicitate with the Centre on her recent milestone – the OPEN HEART SURGERY. He was received by the Board Chairman, Dr Alex Tosan, the Medical Director , Prof Saad Ahmed, Board members, and the Top management committee members.
The visit became necessary because the hospital recently recorded her first four successful Open-Heart Surgeries, more so with a medical team of Nigerians led by Dr Onyekwelu Nzewi.
The Medical Director, in his remarks, thanked the Federal government for the support shown through the Ministry of Health on the Open-Heart Surgery project with infrastructure, equipment and training, owing to the delicacy involved in the procedure.
He also thanked the Minister of (State) Health for deeming it fit to visit the Centre and to identify with the milestone achieved. He stated that the hospital will engage her staff in training to domesticate Open-Heart Surgery and make it a routine procedure.
The Medical Director said that the Centre has set up the Medical Indigent Fund as part of her effort to reduce the cost while appealing to philanthropists and corporate organisations to support the project to subsidise the cost of carrying out the procedure.
The hospital Board Chairman, commended the Medical Director and the members of staff for the synergy brought to the fore in ensuring the success recorded so far, adding that the FMC Abuja did not make a bad decision when it decided to hire Prof. Saad Ahmed to herald the leadership of the Centre.
He further thanked the team from Save-a-Heart Foundation for the support.
The Minister of (State) Health expressed satisfaction on the success of the Open-Heart Surgeries already done in which patients were already up and doing only 48hrs after the surgeries were carried out.
He thanked the management and staff of the hospital for the laudable achievement while reiterating that President Buhari’s administration is committed to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare.
He further visited the ICU to interact with the patients and also inspect other equipment; the laser surgery machine, heart-lung machine among others.
Congratulations to the staff and management of FMC Abuja under the able leadership of Prof. Saad Ahmed for the giant strides.
