The ENT department of the Federal Medical Centre Abuja joined the globe to mark her maiden edition of the world hearing week with series of activities which runs from 28th February to 4th March 2022. The theme for the week is “to hear for life, listen with care.”
In her welcome address the Head of ENT Department Dr. Uche Ukwuije highlighted key points as regards safe listening.
According to her; it is very possible to have good hearing across life’s course through ear and hearing care.
Also safe listening can mitigate the risk of hearing loss associated with recreational sound exposure.
As she appreciated all the invited guest.
The Medical Director Prof Saad Ahmed in his welcome remark called for all hands on deck to curb the problem of ear loss.
According to him, the theme of this year’s event simply point out the need to take good care of our ears.
He also appreciate the effort of ENT department that though still very young but they are performing well.
In the same vein the Boards Chairman of the hospital Dr Alex Tosan Ideh in his remark stressed the need that sense of hearing is a key aspect of functioning at all stages of life and should be given adequate attention.
In his remarks, the special guest of honour, the Distinguished Senator of Federal Republic of Nigerian Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, Chairman Senate Committee stressed the important role policy makers in country should focus on regarding care of the ear and listening attitudes.
He noted that collective effort to add value to world hearing day should be the priority of everyone in the society. According to him, it is important for everyone to have full access to fundamental right to hearing regardless of societal class.
The Senator further disclosed that some illnesses can be attributed to lack of proper care and poor life style living as the case may be with hearing.
That the increasing rate of ear loss is due to some acts people involve in.
Senator Ibrahim in his word said advocacy is very important as part of policy making considerations to address hearing loss in the society.
Also there is need for fund increase by the Government to curb effective ear loss.
He further disclosed that the bill for health insurance that will address mandatory insurance coverage for all citizens of the Nigeria has been passed, waiting for final stage of been implemented.
In his final words the Distinguished Senator pointed out that the government is committed to work with stakeholders in the health sector to improve health service delivery in Nigeria.
He called for more collaboration to change the narrative for better ear and hearing health.
In the goodwill message by representative of WHO, Dr. Elayas Danbosa; Adequate data collation convince donors for fund intervention is very vital in the fight against ear loss.
He also called on the government to create enough awareness on hearing loss.
In an affirmative statement, Dr. Elayas revealed that WHO is committed to Nigeria government with support in it’s effort towards eradicating ear loss to the minimum.
