The Surgery Department of FMC Abuja exists to provide proper medical services to all patients with surgical diseases who seek consultation and treatment in this hospital. In addition, the department provides training to Resident surgeons and also promotes research in the field of surgery.
The department offers a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic surgical services cutting across all subspecialties, these include, but not limited to minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery) upper and lower endoscopy, Endourology (TURP, urethrocystoscopy, lithotripsy), Radical prostatectomy, hip and knee replacement, spine surgery, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, oncology and cardiothoracic surgery.
The department has five well equipped and functional theatre suites with a dedicated surgical emergency unit and a well-equipped fifteen bedded ICU.
The manpower of the department has grown from one Consultant surgeon when the department was established in 2013 to about 20 consultants offering services in different subspecialties of surgery.
The urology unit in collaboration with its trainers has performed quite a number of radical prostatectomies in this hospital, making it the only Government hospital in Abuja performing this procedure.
The trend of the department is to become a centre of excellence for minimal access surgery in Abuja and also to perform ground breaking research in the field of surgery.
