BRIEF HISTORY
The present department of Paediatrics took off at the temporary site of the hospital in Garki II, Abuja with visiting Consultants and eight nurses and the moved to the permanent and current location. Now Federal Medical Centre, Jabi-Airport road on 7th June 2012.
Currently, the department has a total of 46-bed spaces comprising:
- 8 beds in the Emergency Paediatric Unit(EPU)
- 16 beds in the Paediatric ward including private rooms
- 22 beds in the Special Care Baby Unit
MANPOWER
There are presently five Consultants, fourteen resident doctors and fifteen medical officers in the department offering services in the following areas: emergency paediatrics, general paediatrics, neonatology, cardiology, haematology, neurology, infectious diseases, social paediatrics and endocrinology.
There are forty-seven nurses in the department including experienced Paediatric nurses trained in nursing care for children
We also have support staff such as Nurse Assistants (10) and cleaners (9)
FACILITIES/ SERVICES
The emergency Paediatric Unit(EPU) is equipped with facilities for resuscitation and emergency care of children.
The paediatric ward is also well equipped and decorated in a child-friendly manner.
The special care baby unit has state-of-the-art neonatal equipment including incubators, ventilators, phototherapy units, advanced monitors, infusion pumps, etc. where the term and preterm babies are on admission.
We offer round-the-clock paediatric clinic at the Paediatric Out-patient Department which had furnished consulting rooms.
The department also has a Seminar room with a multimedia projector used for departmental meetings which are aimed at updating the knowledge of staff and keeping everyone abreast with current medical trends. In addition, we have a departmental library with relevant and recent books/journals in Paediatrics as well as internet facilities.
The department has two well-equipped side laboratories for bedside investigations such as Blood glucose estimation, Urinalysis, packed cell volume, serum bilirubin and rapid diagnostic test for malaria parasites.
Immunization services are also available for vaccine-preventable diseases.
The same services are also extended to the private wing of the hospital.
