The surgical emergency unit of the hospital started the same day FMC Abuja officially opened for services to the public and was called the Accident and Emergency Department before the separation of the Medical and Paediatric Emergency Units in 2018.
STAFF STRENGTH
The unit presently comprises of the following staff strength;
- Eight doctors with one consultant as the head
- Twelve (12) Nurses
- Eight (8) attendants
- Four (4) Plaster technicians.

The services rendered by the Surgical Emergency unit include the following:
- Reception and primary resuscitation of the following emergencies:
- Orthopedic and Trauma
- General surgery
- Urosurgery
- Burns and Plastic
- Neurosurgery
- Ophthalmology
- ENT
- Minor surgical procedures such as:
- Wound debridement
- Excision of ingrowing toe-nails
- Incision and drainage of abscesses
- Stump wound refashioning
- Chest tube insertions
- Manipulation of simple fractures and application of casts
- Dressing of wounds
- Weekly foot club clinic
- Medical information collection
- Surgical resident training
